Travel Rwanda / DRC with Anne Fornier

Nyiragongo and Gorillas

Travel details Rwanda / DRC

Rwanda, a republic in east-central Africa, is bordered by Uganda to the north, Tanzania to the east, Burundi to the south and Lake Kivu and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west.

Nyiragongo (Stratovolcano – 3469 m), one of the most active volcanoes in the world, is located at the southern end of the western arm of the Great Rift Valley, in the Virunga Mountains range (Democratic Republic of Congo).

The East African Rift is a giant collapse in the lithosphere of the African continent. It stretches from south of the Red Sea to north of the Zambezi more than 6000 km long and 40 to 60 km wide. It divides into two branches north of Lake Malawi. Large deep lakes occupy this rift: Lake Kivu, Lake Tanganyka, Lake Malawi.

Anne Fornier

“During my childhood I met a very wise man, Haroun Tazieff. He was a famous French volcanologist. We spoke the same language but I didn’t understand his words, they were so complicated that I was moved by the passion with which he spoke. That’s how my vocation began. That’s how my life began…

After 4 years at university studying physical geography (volcanic hazard analysis), I needed to see volcanoes and their eruptions around the world. I travelled to India, Pakistan, Ethiopia and other places to study them. I worked for a travel agency as a scientific guide and my speciality was, of course, volcanoes.

Every time a volcano erupted, I was there with TV crews, volcano-loving scientists… Back in France with my backpacks full of obsidians, lava bombs, rocks and a thousand dreams, I had to pack my backpacks again because planes were waiting for me for new expeditions.

During an expedition to the island of Vanuatu I met Sylvain. Driven by the same passion, we created an association for risk prevention. We had to help the populations living near volcanoes at risk of acid rain. He stayed there to work in the volcanological observatory and I continued to travel to see more eruptions and to see what could be done to prevent eruptions.

It was with great illusion that I met Montserrat Hospital in Barcelona. Encouraged by the desire to help people, to make the world not stay with the superficiality of life, to share emotions and to work together with a new project. So a new way of life began…”.
